Limits of Language: A New Beginning

Welcome to Limits of Language: New and Archival Work!

This marks a new beginning for me as I reengage in a photography practice that has largely been on hold for the past 5+ years, during which raising two young kids, a tenure-track professorship (tenure packet submitted), and relocating to a new country have taken priority. This space is meant to be a slowed-down version of social media, where flashy, single images tend to get the most attention (no shade, as I will certainly be posting single images here and on Instagram too), while the slower process of an ongoing, (maybe) longer-term photography project is neglected. This has always been how I make photographs: using ideas, relationships, and environments to tell a photographic story.

And so, Limits of Language will be an online space where I will post new photography (and other artwork), sometimes including discussions of my thinking and process in making these photographs. In the end, as the blog title states, the discussion (i.e., language) will have limitations, and it will be up to the photographs to communicate the process, meaning, and story.

I will also be digging into my archive of over 20 years of photographic work, much of which was hand-printed in black-and-white or color darkrooms, or sleeping on a hard drive buried in the closet. I figure it’s time to share photographs that never saw the light of day and revisit those that stand out to me most.

Lastly, I will be posting prints, zines, and self-published books of my work for sale.

I hope you’ll follow along.
